Have you ever wondered how a racing greyhound starts its journey? Before they hit the track, these incredible athletes undergo months of careful breeding, nurturing, and early development. The foundation for their future success begins from the moment they are born, with dedicated care ensuring they grow into strong, healthy, and well-socialised young dogs.
In this instalment of The Puppy Diaries, we explore the three-month to twelve-months stage of a greyhound puppy. If you missed our last article about the early life of a greyhound puppy, you could access it here The Puppy Diaries: Newborn to Three Months
Play, Exploration & Early Development
During the 3–12-month period, greyhound puppies rapidly grow, learn and socialise. At about 3 months old greyhound puppies are full of curiosity and energy. At this time, they will move to a bigger enclosure with their littermates, often with access to a bigger field where they can explore and play each day.
The next few months are full of play, interaction and fun. Through this stage puppies will rapidly grow and learn how to run, play (and fight!) with their siblings. Forms of enrichment is crucial at this stage. Marrow bones are used for chewing and to ensure good dental health. Toys such as balls, teddies and ropes are provided for stimulation. Handlers also provide fun activities for puppies. Of course, the most entertaining “toys” are stolen items such as hats, bags and water bottles!
Socialisation & Pack Dynamics
Usually, puppies of this age are kept together as a litter (unlike other breeds!) but often a puppy from a different lineage is introduced. This helps develop their social skills, pack hierarchy and problem-solving skills through interactions.
Handlers form closer bonds with their puppies as they grow. One on one interactions become increasingly important, allowing them to monitor and track each puppy. Puppies are handled regularly and become well lead trained. Handlers also monitor their weight, nails, teeth and coat regularly to ensure peak health. As well as administrating regular parasite treatments.
Nutrition & Comfort
Growing greyhounds need frequent, small meals to match their metabolism and support their energy levels. Their diet typically includes: A variety of foods such as specialised biscuit, chicken, raw meat, offal, fish, tripe, cheese, soup and a variety of supplements.
Bedding choices vary by season and carer preference. Bedding can range from shredded paper, straw, shavings or duvets and blankets (which often are the source of destruction).
As puppies reach nine months old, they start growing into their bodies, becoming more coordinated and agile. They will often spend most mornings and evenings running with their pack, weaving throughout each other, a crucial skill for future racing. As they approach their first birthday, they begin the exciting transition from playful pups to young athletes in training. Their bodies become stronger, their movements more refined, and their natural instincts sharper.
